Another Step Forward

One of the greatest privileges of being a courthouse facility dog team is having the opportunity to build relationships that can make the justice system a little less intimidating for those who need it most. This month, Polar and I had the opportunity to meet with members of the State Attorney's Office to discuss how a courthouse facility dog could be utilized in criminal court proceedings within Florida's Sixth Judicial Circuit. We spent time discussing what a courthouse facility dog is, how accredited facility dogs differ from therapy dogs, and the many ways they can provide quiet, unobtrusive support throughout criminal court proceedings.

For children, survivors of violent crime, and other vulnerable individuals, walking into a courtroom can be one of the most overwhelming experiences of their lives. The presence of a professionally trained facility dog can help reduce stress, create a greater sense of emotional safety, and allow individuals to focus on sharing their experiences rather than managing their fear.

Every courtroom, every case, and every individual is different. The use of a facility dog is never about influencing testimony or changing the judicial process. Instead, it is about supporting the person navigating that process, helping them feel calm enough to participate as fully and accurately as possible.

These conversations are an exciting step toward expanding the ways Hero to a Child's Courthouse Facility Dog Program can serve our community. Whether Polar is supporting children involved in dependency court, accompanying youth through forensic interviews, or potentially assisting participants in criminal proceedings, our mission remains the same: to reduce stress, provide comfort, and help create an environment where healing and justice can coexist.

We are grateful to the State Attorney's Office for welcoming us, asking thoughtful questions, and exploring what this partnership could look like in the future. As we continue building awareness throughout our community, we look forward to every opportunity to demonstrate the incredible impact a courthouse facility dog can have, one person and one case at a time.

Thank you for following Polar's journey. We can't wait to share what comes next.
