Building on a New Partnership

Sometimes things come full circle faster than you expect.

Last month, Polar and I met with the State Attorney's Office to talk about how an accredited courthouse facility dog could be used in criminal court proceedings. We left that meeting hopeful, knowing we'd planted a seed, and it wasn’t long before that seed sprouted!

We received a request to attend an evidentiary hearing, marking Polar's very first appearance on the stand in criminal court.

If you've never heard of an evidentiary hearing, you're not alone. It's a hearing where the judge listens to testimony and reviews evidence before making decisions about certain legal issues in a criminal case. It can be an intimidating environment for anyone, especially children.

There were several children involved in this case, and we met them outside the courtroom before the hearing began. It was evident immediately that one of the girls was visibly more shaken and nervous than the others. She was scared.

Polar noticed too.

When it was time to walk into the courtroom, Polar accompanied the children inside, and from that moment on, he stayed glued to her side. He didn't need anyone to tell him where he was needed. He just knew, and as the hearing unfolded, Polar quietly did what he has been trained to do. He leaned in when she needed reassurance, stayed close when the room felt overwhelming, and offered the kind of comfort that only a dog like Polar seems to know how to give.

Not to influence testimony. Not to change the outcome of a case. Just to help someone through one of the hardest moments of their life with a little less fear than they walked in with.

This hearing wasn't just another day at the courthouse. It was a milestone. One month after opening the conversation with the State Attorney's Office, Polar was already putting that partnership into action.

We’re all incredibly proud of him. He may not understand what an evidentiary hearing is or why everyone is dressed in suits, but he knows when someone is hurting, and on that day, that's exactly what was needed.

Here's to the first of what we hope will be many opportunities for Polar to bring comfort, courage, and a little bit of calm into criminal court.
