Skylar’s Happy Ending
Adoption day is one of those rare moments in child welfare where everything feels a little lighter. Courtrooms that are usually filled with hard conversations, uncertainty, and heavy emotions transform into places filled with laughter, happy tears, balloons, stuffed animals, and celebration. The same people who walk alongside children through some of the hardest parts of their stories get to pause together and witness something beautiful: a child finally gaining the permanency, love, and sense of belonging they’ve always deserved.
For children in the foster care system, life can feel uncertain for far too long. Homes may change, schools may change, trusted adults can come and go, and routines can shift without warning. Even in safe and caring placements, many children carry a quiet uncertainty in the back of their minds, wondering: What’s going to happen next?
Adoption day answers that question!
Recently, Polar had the privilege of being invited to celebrate Skylar’s adoption day, and from the moment that 12-year-old little girl walked into the courtroom, the excitement around her was palpable. Surrounded by friends and family, there were smiles, happy tears, photos being taken, and the overwhelming feelings of love and joy filled the air
And right in the middle of it all was Polar. He sat beside Skylar and happily made his rounds through the room, giving hugs, wagging his tail, and smiling along side of everyone for photographs while they celebrated her special day.
In this work, we spend most of our time standing beside children during the most difficult chapters of their lives. Those moments matter deeply, and every child deserves comfort, support, and someone steady beside them. But days like this matter too. Being welcomed into the joyful parts of a child’s story, the moments where hope replaces uncertainty and the future finally feels safe and secure, is something we never take for granted at Hero to a Child.
We’d like to extend a very special thank you to Skylar for allowing Polar and Tammie to share in such an important day, and to her adoptive mother for graciously allowing us to share one of the photographs from the celebration. It was a true privilege to witness such a beautiful milestone, and we wish your family a lifetime filled with love, laughter, and happy memories together.
Without a doubt, the best part of this work is getting to stand in a courtroom and watching a little girl smile from ear to ear while a judge declares what everyone in the room already knows:
