Mara is a withdrawn fourth grader with the comprehension level of a first grader. Mike, her brother, is in first grade but is also intellectually delayed. Both children were cared for by homeless parents with little stability for much of their young life. Mara makes animal noises when stressed and her therapist recommended a summer camp program with horseback riding, recreation, and arts and crafts for both siblings. Both children were able to attend a camp for 2 weeks and they completely “opened up.” The foster mom reports that since their camp experience both are making gains in verbal and social skills.
